Where I come from is quite conservative and difficult to be openly gay. You don’t hear people talking positively about it. It’s ‘abnormal’ or ‘disgusting’ to be gay. Luckily I lived in the capital where it is a little more acceptable, I think if I’d lived anywhere else I probably wouldn’t be here today. It wasn’t until I left that I was able to be… free, and live openly as gay man.

I feel fortunate when I look at how other countries like Uganda treat their LGBT citizens compared to Chile. We do have rights and things have become better. But my girlfriend and I still can’t get married and we can’t claim the same benefits that married couples can even though we’ve been living together for five years. I do see abuse and hatred happen to friends sometimes and it scares me, but I know that living as less of a person or living in the dark is not an option for me.
